Soft delete lets you recover a workspace or database that you deleted by mistake. Instead of permanently deleting the resource right away, Savanna moves it to Deleted Items, where it stays recoverable for a recovery period. During this period, you can restore the resource or delete it permanently.

What is soft delete?

Savanna supports two types of deletion for workspaces and databases:

Soft delete Permanent delete (hard delete)

What happens

The resource moves to Deleted Items. Its configuration and data are kept, but you cannot use it until you restore it.

The resource and its data are removed right away.

Can you recover it?

Yes, until the recovery period ends.

No. Permanent deletion cannot be undone.

Available on

Paid, Premium, and Enterprise tiers

All tiers. On the Free tier, every deletion is permanent.

Soft delete applies to workspaces and databases only. Deleting a workgroup is always permanent.

What you can do

With soft delete, you can:

  • Recover from mistakes. Restore a deleted workspace or database with its original configuration and data.

  • Track what is recoverable. See when each resource was deleted, how many days it remains recoverable, and when it will be permanently deleted.

  • Free capacity when you need it. Delete a resource permanently without waiting for the recovery period to end.

Before you start

To soft delete a workspace or database:

  • Your organization must be on a Paid, Premium, or Enterprise tier.

  • You must have permission to delete the resource. See Access management.

  • Your Deleted Items quota for that resource type must have available capacity. See Deleted Items quota.

  • A workspace cannot be soft deleted while it is being created, stopped, or deleted.

  • To soft delete a database, every workspace attached to it must already be soft deleted or terminated.

To permanently delete a database, no active workspace can be attached to it.

Soft delete a workspace or database

  1. In Savanna, open the workgroup that contains the workspace or database.

  2. Next to the workspace or database, click … and select Delete.

  3. Review the confirmation dialog. It shows how long the resource will remain recoverable and how much of your Deleted Items quota is used.

  4. Select the soft delete option and confirm.

The resource moves to Deleted Items and no longer appears in your active lists. If it is a workspace, Savanna stops it.

A resource in Deleted Items keeps its name. You cannot create a new workspace or database with the same name in the workgroup until the original is restored or permanently deleted.

View deleted items

Open Deleted Items in the workspaces or databases view of the workgroup.

For each resource, Savanna shows:

  • The resource name and type

  • The date it was deleted

  • The number of days it remains recoverable

  • The date it will be permanently deleted

From Deleted Items, you can restore a resource or delete it permanently.

Restore a resource

You can restore a resource from Deleted Items until Savanna permanently deletes it.

Restore a workspace

  1. In Deleted Items, find the workspace you want to restore.

  2. Click Restore and confirm.

The workspace returns to your active workspace list in the Stopped state, with its original configuration and data. It does not start automatically. Start it when you are ready to use it.

If the workspace’s database is also in Deleted Items, Savanna restores the database together with the workspace.

Restore a database

  1. In Deleted Items, find the database you want to restore.

  2. Click Restore and confirm.

The database returns to your active database list.

Restoring a database does not restore its deleted workspaces. Restore each workspace separately.

Delete a resource permanently

You can delete a resource permanently in two ways:

  • From Deleted Items. Find the resource, click Delete Permanently, and confirm.

  • From your active list. When you delete the resource, choose to delete it permanently instead of moving it to Deleted Items.

Permanent deletion cannot be undone. If you permanently delete a database, any soft-deleted workspaces attached to it are also permanently deleted.

Recovery period

When you soft delete a resource, it stays in Deleted Items for the recovery period. The length of the recovery period depends on your organization’s tier. Deleted Items shows the exact permanent deletion date for each resource.

If you do not restore or permanently delete the resource, Savanna permanently deletes it after the recovery period ends.

Permanent deletion runs on a schedule, so a resource may remain in Deleted Items for a short time after its permanent deletion date. Until permanent deletion begins, you can still restore it.

Notifications

Savanna notifies your organization when a resource moves to Deleted Items. It sends reminders 5 days and 1 day before the resource is permanently deleted, so you have time to restore it.

Deleted Items quota

Resources in Deleted Items do not count toward your active workspace and database quotas.

Deleted Items has its own quota, which depends on your tier. Workspaces and databases have separate limits, so reaching the limit for one type does not affect the other.

When the quota for a resource type is full, you cannot soft delete another resource of that type. To continue, do one of the following:

  • Permanently delete an older resource of the same type from Deleted Items.

  • Permanently delete the current resource instead.

For quota limits by tier, see Subscription plans and quota policy.

Deletion on the Free tier

The Free tier does not support soft delete. When you delete a workspace or database on the Free tier, Savanna deletes it permanently.

Before you confirm deletion on the Free tier, make sure you no longer need the resource. Permanent deletion cannot be undone.
